Your role in polio research
As virologist you support the current expert on polioviruses within the WHO Global Polio Laboratory Network (GPLN). You work together with an enthusiastic team of laboratory technicians and other experts on diagnosis, surveillance and characterization of polioviruses, as part of the national and international poliovirus reference laboratory. In addition, you ensure the quality and implementation of laboratory tasks within the GPLN and contribute to biorisk management activities under the WHO Global Action Plan for Poliovirus Containment (GAPIV).
Your work includes:
- Contributions to the WHO Quality Assurance program for the GPLN;
- Developing and optimizing innovative molecular techniques for the detection and characterization of polioviruses. You will also be using these techniques to conduct laboratory surveillance, reference diagnostics and molecular epidemiology of polioviruses;
- Analysis of complex data and writing scientific reports and publications;
- Identification of new developments within the poliovirus domain and translating these into laboratory practice;
- You will ensure compliance with biosafety and biosecurity guidelines at the Poliovirus Essential Facility.
About the department
You will work within the RIVM Center for Infectious Diseases, Diagnostics and Laboratory Surveillance in the Virology department of the Vaccination Program. In this department work 24 colleagues with great dedication on multiple topics. Our department is (among other responsibilities), responsible for national and international laboratory surveillance and diagnostics of poliovirus, and plays a key role within the WHO's Global Polio Laboratory Network. We perform under strict quality and biosafety requirements. Together, we work on the eradication of poliovirus and contribute to public health worldwide. Furthermore, RIVM has a GAPIV certified poliovirus essential facility (PEF).
