How you contribute
As part of the Data Science cluster in the R&D Weather and Climate Models department, we are driving the development, maintenance, and application of several cutting-edge machine learning (ML) models. Our focus is on advancing ML methods for post-processing of numerical weather prediction (NWP) model output, as well as developing data-driven weather models using machine learning. You will be working with large, detailed datasets and working on a project that has a direct impact on our weather forecasts.
Your activities
- You’ll contribute to the development of post-processing modules to improve probabilistic weather forecasts for airports across the Netherlands and for platforms in the North Sea. This post-processing is based on our operational high-resolution NWP model Harmonie-Arome.
- You will verify the developed applications and prepare them for use in KNMI’s operational environment and in KNMI’s visualization system GeoWeb. The results will be presented to stakeholders both within and outside KNMI and be written in reports.
- Additionally, you are responsible for keeping other (pre-)operational post-processing modules up and running, and for updating them if necessary.
We also understand that you might want to learn more about this position. Therefore, feel free to contact Maurice Schmeits, coordinator of the Data Science cluster, at +31 6 15 64 89 02. He will be happy to assist you!
