Functieomschrijving

Intercepted communications are crucial for tracing criminals. Who is speaking to whom? Who is coordinating, who is supplying the vehicles and who is the perpetrator? Thousands of conversations need to be analysed and data merged in order to identify criminal networks. As a PhD student at the Netherlands Forensic Institute, you will develop analysis techniques to answer these questions with the aid of data science and AI. You will thus be contributing to a safer society.

You will work in the Forensic Big Data Analytics (FBDA) team of the Digital and Biometric Traces division (DBS - Digitale Biometrische Sporen). The team utilises data analysis to respond to forensic investigation queries about the use of evidence in legal proceedings, for example. You will work closely with the University of Amsterdam’s Informatics Institute, where you will obtain your PhD. In addition, you will contribute to ROXANNE (Real time network, text, and speaker analytics for combating organised crime), an EU Horizon 2020 project that brings together leading scientific institutes, technology providers and law enforcement agencies from across the whole of Europe. The objective is to develop analysis and visualisation techniques for intercepted communications, and to evaluate those against data obtained by the police.

Applicable research questions

  • Can we tie the characteristics of someone’s voice profile and diction to the movements of the mobile phone they used to establish the identity of the speaker with greater certainty?
  • Can we use advanced statistical methods in large criminal investigations to automatically group conversations, telephones and users and provide end users with an insight into this classification?
  • Is automatic speech recognition good enough to recognise relevant conversations or themes if contextual information is used to identify the speaker?

Your tasks

  • You conduct research into and develop innovative analysis methods for speaker identification, natural language processing, social network analysis, machine learning and deep learning. The focus is on intercepted communications and location data.
  • You present your research in leading scientific journals and at international conferences.
  • You develop software tools based on the research you conduct.
  • You work in the FBDA team to validate the developed methods against data obtained in practice.
  • You work at the Informatics Institute in Amsterdam one day a week (on average) to gain wider input and ideas for your research.
  • You contribute to European project meetings.
