Climate change is one of the most urgent societal issues worldwide. To monitor the important anthropogenic greenhouse gas CO2, its sources and sinks, and to contribute to the Paris climate agreement, Europe will develop a dedicated satellite mission, called the CO2M satellite.
KNMI has the ambition to contribute to the CO2M satellite. KNMI plays a strong international role in the field of satellite monitoring of air pollutants like NO2, which can be used as a tracer for CO2 emissions. The most detailed NO2 pollution maps are measured by the TROPOMI instrument on the European Sentinel-5P satellite, which project is led by KNMI.
The junior scientist will contribute to the definition and development of the CO2M satellite. The junior scientist will work in a team of scientists working on instrument calibration and algorithms development for TROPOMI and OMI, based on expertise in atmospheric processes, data analysis, and software development. The work will be done in international cooperation, with ESA and EUMETSAT as funding agencies, and with partner institutes.
The developed algorithms will be applied to existing satellite observations and new satellite missions. The results will be used in operational applications and presented in scientific journals and on conferences.
The applicant is expected to:
- Have a Master degree in physics or a related field;
- Be fluent in English;
- Have knowledge of satellite retrievals;
- Have good analytic and mathematical skills;
- Have good communicative skills;
- Work harmoniously in a research team;
- Is eager to learn the various aspects of satellite missions;
- Have good knowledge of Python.
