Functieomschrijving
Biodiversity loss is an ongoing worldwide problem, due to the increasing economic demand for food, energy and materials. The economy does not only cause impacts on nature, but is also dependent on the goods and services that nature provides to the economy. These developments also have consequences for the financial sector, as they present new types of risks for the loans and investments of financial institutions. Especially the UK Dasgupta review has made this subject a matter of broad concern, and recommended policy interventions.
To reverse this situation, structural changes are needed in production and consumption patterns, en in the way economic activities are financed. Awareness on the biodiversity risks is rising, tools and methodologies are rapidly being developed to get more grip on this field of environmental degradation. These tools are needed to inform future investment decisions by the financial sector, by mainstreaming biodiversity in their risk models and in their reporting activities.
The Horizon Europe project SUSTAIN (Strengthening Understanding and Strategies of business To Assess and Integrate Nature) is addressing the need for improved tools and databases to analyse consequences for the finance sector by, 1) providing an enhanced knowledge base on dependencies and impacts, validated by businesses; 2) develop methods to reduce biodiversity related risks through innovative modelling techniques; 3) package the knowledge base in a toolbox for use by businesses and finance; and other work packages. This will be done in cooperation with and drawing on the relationships and networks of partners in the international SUSTAIN project consortium. Central in this approach is the ENCORE approach, developed by UN WCMC centre.
PBL is also cooperating with the Dutch National Bank to assess the consequences of loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services for the stability of the Dutch financial sector. In a cooperative project, different risk channels are analysed for both economy-wide effects and for effects on individual financial institutes. Economic and ecological models have to be linked to make progress on this subject.
Within the SUSTAIN and PBL-DNB projects, PBL is looking for a junior researcher who can contribute 1) to develop databases on biodiversity impacts and dependencies for companies and their supply-chains 2) to develop land-use scenarios to feed into risk analyses tools for the financial sector 3) to link ecological models to financial risk models, building on PBL’s model framework, i.e.e IMAGE, GLOBIO and an EMRIO Input-Output model.
